Oil Painting Class

January 30 – March 6
Fine Arts Center

Discover the beauty and versatility of oil painting in this welcoming, hands-on class designed for both beginners and experienced artists, taught by Alice Dustin.

New painters will learn the fundamentals - how to start a painting, mix and apply colors, and build strong, balanced compositions. Through step-by-step instruction and demonstrations, students will gain confidence in handling materials and expressing their creative vision.

For returning or more experienced painters, the class offers individualized guidance, constructive feedback, and lively discussion to help refine technique and deepen personal style.

Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or continuing your artistic journey, this class provides a supportive environment to explore, experiment, and grow as a painter. See supply list below.

Registration for this class is $150 and limited to 12 people.

Class supplies are listed below and must be obtained by each student before the first class.

Easels will be provided. If you have your own supplies, bring them AND bring bags to carry out brushes, etc., as we can’t clean them or toss out rags in the studio.

For beginners, you will need:

  • One tube each of red, blue, yellow, and white oil paint (Do not get “student grade” as it is diluted with fillers, which makes mixing color difficult.)
  • Turpenoid (Do not get the water-soluble type.)
  • Linseed Oil (bring both the turpenoid and the oil in small jars with lids)
  • A canvas or prepared board (gesso’d). I suggest 12” by 16” or similar.
  • A palette (I make mine from freezer paper, shiny side up, taped to cardboard. It should be a good size—12” by 16” is good.)
  • Two brushes—one the width of your thumb, the other may be smaller.
  • Some strong paper towels or small soft rags.
  • At least two bags to bring home your brushes and rags/paper towels.
  • Optional (I use them) “rubber” gloves.

Art supplies can be purchased from Dick Blick (13th and Chestnut Street, Philadelphia—store brand). Please text Alice Dustin, the teacher for this class, if you have any questions: (812) 272-4933.
