This Lenten season we will experience and learn more about Christian prayer traditions in conjunction with our 2023 BMPC Lenten Devotional and worship which walks through the Lord’s Prayer each week.
The Labyrinth – Walking Prayer
Sunday, March 5, 11:15 a.m., Fullerton Room
Since the Middle Ages Christians have practiced walking prayer and meditation through the use of labyrinths, first as a substitute for religious pilgrimage and now as a method of creative and physical prayer. Anne Montgomery Schmid, BMPC member and certified labyrinth facilitator, will guide participants through the history, practice, and divine mystery of walking the labyrinth with a focus on our Labyrinth Ministry here at BMPC. Following the class, you will have the opportunity to walk our Chartres Labyrinth in Congregational Hall. For more information, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. The Biblical Origins of the Lord’s Prayer
Sunday, March 12, 11:15 a.m.
Fullerton Room
As we spend the Season of Lent together, we will learn more about the biblical roots of the Lord’s Prayer: how it fits within the Gospels; why it is translated differently in different traditions; and the ways that it connects to other prayer practices of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament. Dr. Joshua Yoder will lead this conversation. For more information, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
The Bible’s Influence on Worship and Prayer
Sunday, March 19, 11:15 a.m.
Fullerton Room
Many of our modern Presbyterian worship practices originated in the prayer and worship practices of the Old and New Testaments. In this class we will make connections between some of the clear connections in our worship – such as the sacraments – along with the ways that we look to the Bible to help us shape our worship values. Finally, we will consider which ancient worship practices are out of sync with our modern worship traditions. The Rev. Rebecca Kirkpatrick will lead this conversation. Modern Prayer Traditions
Sunday, March 26, 11:15 a.m.
Fullerton Room
Traditions around Christian prayer and worship practices have evolved over two centuries, but there are some faith traditions and texts that have continued to be meaningful for believers of all traditions. This Sunday we will consider the origins of well-known prayers like the Prayer of St. Francis, prayer practices that Ignatius of Loyola created, as well as modern prayers such as the Serenity Prayer, that have been meaningful for generations of Christians. The Rev. Rebecca Kirkpatrick will lead this conversation. For more information, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
