BMPC Tutoring Program

The Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church Tutoring Program brings together approximately 120 elementary school children from North Philadelphia and an equal number of students from public and independent high schools of the western suburbs.  Each elementary child is assigned a high school tutor and together they work on reading and writing skills. Beginning its 40th year in September 2005, this program takes place at BMPC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  In addition to academic goals, the program helps children and tutors grow in self-confidence, become more aware of each other's worlds, and develop friendships.

The Tuesday night children come from the Anna B. Pratt School, 22nd and Susquehanna; the Wednesday night children are from the William Dick School, 25th and Diamond.

There are 32 adults involved as group leaders and librarians. Group leaders usually work as a twosome with a group consisting of ten pairs of child and tutor. The group leaders help create an atmosphere for learning, make suggestions if necessary, provide discipline, and organize group activities. The adult leaders develop a relationship with both the tutors and children.

The Tutoring Program is the oldest continuous volunteer program in the school district of Philadelphia.  Commitment is high.  Over the years, the program has served and helped approximately 4800 children and has been supported by over 4250 tutors and 475 adults.  Many adults have worked in the program for years and volunteer tutors include second generation participants.
