Hunger Task Force – Would You Like to Join Us?
By Ella Edwards

Maybe you’ve been thinking that you’d like to join a group at church, but aren’t sure which one would be a “good fit.” Maybe you’re curious about what a group like the Hunger Task Force actually does – well, you’ve come to the right article!

The Hunger Task Force (HTF) meets on the third Thursday of every month from September to May. Our chairperson, Dave Hastings, heads a group of approximately 20 men and women who are either working (in-home or out) or some version of “retired.” Our lives run the gamut from singing in the choir, to caring for children and/or aging parents, volunteering, writing books, managing businesses, or working in hospitals and school programs. No matter how different we may be, we are united in our common goal to serve the community through feeding the hungry.

Each HTF member serves as a liaison to one of the organizations that we support with your donations in the white “Hunger” envelopes. At the first meeting of the service year, we sign up for special tasks, such as making a casserole delivery or writing a Messenger article. During the year, we volunteer for other assignments, including casserole blitzes, collecting and delivering food for the annual Harvest Food Collection, baking cookies for the Alternative Gift Market, making sandwiches for the shelters with Church School second graders, or staffing the annual spring brunch for the organizations we serve.

At the monthly HTF meeting, we open with a prayer and review our agenda. Sometimes we invite a speaker from one of the food cupboards or shelters we support, in order to stay in touch with their need for food assistance. For instance, a representative from First African Presbyterian Church recently spoke about their ministry, including their food cupboard and financial counseling for the recently unemployed. We consistently hear the same message from our speakers: that they could not provide food assistance to those in need without the support – of canned goods, casseroles and contributions – provided by BMPC.

So if you’re looking for a volunteer home – welcome to the Hunger Task Force!
