 | Pine Ridge is home to approximately 38,000 Native Americans, mostly Lakota Sioux. Located in the badlands east of the Black Hills, Pine Ridge encompasses two of the poorest counties in the United States. It is afflicted with high rates of diabetes, addiction, unemployment and crime. In fact, the life expectancy of a male living on Pine Ridge is only 48 years. Despite facing many challenges, the Lakota Sioux are spiritually rich and full of hope.
For several years, BMPC has engaged with the people of Pine Ridge. In the late 1980’s BMPC’s Hunger Task Force made a significant leadership grant to the Oglala Truck Gardening Cooperative Association to help increase local production of healthy foods through better irrigation and farming practices (in the arid climate and unproductive soil). From the 1990’s, BMPC provided a tractor and other support for Running Strong for American Indian Youth. In 2004 and again in 2005, BMPC youth have visited Pine Ridge to build bunk beds under the auspices of ReMember, an organization formed to help provide for basic needs among the many poor and broken families on the reservation. Our hope is to continue building ties between the BMPC and Pine Ridge communities that will promote cultural and spiritual strength and harmony.
