The first Richard
Shaull Worldwide Ministry
Award will fund... The Award goes to the Universidad Biblica Latinoamericana
(Latin American Biblical University, UBL), San Jose, Costa Rica for a project
called "The Bible and Culture." Selected professors of the University will
conduct a series of investigative workshops combined with research within the
racially diverse Caribbean region of Costa Rica on how gender and culture
affected both the writing of the Bible and how it is read and interpreted.
The final document of this study will benefit future Biblical studies students
and has the possibility of changing the way the Bible is studied, particularly
within Latin America and the Afro/Indigenous cultures. BMPC has had a long-standing relationship with UBL. Gloria and Ross Kinsler,
missionaries in the 1980s and 1990s, worked at the University and were supported
by BMPC. In recent years, Presbyterian Women and Youth Ministries at BMPC
have supported mission/work trips to UBL. Richard Shaull taught at the
university and in 1997 was awarded Professor Emeritus. BMPC member Nancy
Johns, assisted the university in organizing the One Million Women campaign that
raised a million dollars for the building of a new campus.
