Nurturing Minds-SEGA Girls School
BMPC Liaison: Carl Giombetti
Africa
Nurturing Minds’ mission is: to provide financial and technical support to programs improving access to quality education for girls in Tanzania, with a particular emphasis on girls who are poor, marginalized, and at-risk of becoming involved in exploitative forms of child labor. More specifically, Nurturing Minds is working with a Tanzanian partner, SEGA (Secondary Education for Girls’ Advancement), to provide quality education to poor girls to enable them to successfully qualify for and complete secondary school (grades 8 – 13). SEGA runs a day program for girls who had dropped out of school due to poverty, to integrate them back into the formal school system; and a secondary boarding school for girls, which opened with its first class of eighth graders in January 2010. Its goal is to have The Sega Girls School residential campus for 200 girls completed by 2015.
Volunteer Opportunities: Examples of opportunities for participation and engagement by the BMPC congregation include but are not limited to: Cultural exchange in Tanzania and Morogoro: Visit the Sega Girls’ School and teach or tutor students in English; visit surrounding communities and areas, getting the opportunity to visit homes, see the natural beauty of the Uluguru Mountains, Udzungwa Forest Reserve, or Mikumi National Parks. Service Work in Tanzania: Undertake longer-term service work in teaching our students or conducting teacher training; and/or hands-on physical labor activities such as tree planting/gardening activities and/or construction. § Nurturing Minds Special Projects – in the US, work with us on specific projects such as website development, marketing, school outreach, corporate outreach, fundraising events, etc. § Technical Consulting – The Sega Girls School has needs (organic farming; construction; education; entrepreneurial business development, etc), we are always eager for further assistance. § Regular Communication: Review and provide input to the plans and progress of the development of the Sega Girls School through presentations, newsletters, and email exchange with individual members.
