History of the Richard
Shaull Award Recipients
What is
The Richard Shaull Worldwide Ministries Fund and Award?
The
Richard Shaull Worldwide Ministries Award is an annual award for
special mission projects consistent with the goals of Worldwide
Ministries at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (as approved by the BMPC
Session) and consistent with the life and witness of Richard Shaull.
The purpose of the award is to fund new mission undertakings, to
provide support for remarkable mission leaders, and to promote the
mission and ministry of Christ’s Church in the world. To qualify,
projects must fall into the categories of social justice or
transformational ministry. The Award is funded through capital funds
raised in the BMPC Campaign for Worship, Music and Mission. The
campaign funds so designated are invested with the BMPC Foundation
as a restricted fund. The income from the Richard Shaull Fund is
awarded once each year as a special grant made outside the World
Wide Ministries Council (WMC) budget and administered by the
Worldwide Ministries Council. It is a one-time grant funding new
projects that are outside the WMC budget.
Who was Richard Shaull? 1919 – 2002
Richard Shaull was a member of the Presbytery of Philadelphia,
Parish Associate of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, and Professor
of Ecumenics Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was an
ordained Presbyterian Minister, an educator, religious leader,
liberation theologian, missionary and author whose career spanned
more than half a century. His quiet influence was felt in the
Presbyterian Church (USA), the World Council of Churches, in the
Church in Latin America, and in the lives of countless students on
several continents. He was a member of BMPC’s Worldwide Ministries
Council and helped the Council increasingly move toward ministries
of justice and transform. He had a deep belief in the possibility of
radical change on both social and personal levels and spent his life
working with others toward the realization of this dream. At the
time of Dick’s death a colleague wrote: “Shaull spoke truth to power
-- which is brave, and life to death -- which is transcendent.”
The first award was presented
on March, 2006
