The Presbyterian Cuba Connection
By Dan Everitt

The primary goal of this funded project will be the restoration of a critical facility needed for Christian ministry committed to social justice and service in the historic Presbyterian center of Cardenas, Cuba. The Juan G. Hall of the Church in Cardenas is a three-story annex of the historic mother church of Cuban Presbyterianism. The Hall was erected in 1910 and housed the education and community space and the pastoral house. While the sanctuary has been restored, the hall is in danger of total loss if damages are not repaired soon. Years of no maintenance during the wilderness era of the Cuban church, in addition to more recent hurricane damage, have taken a heavy toll.

As the promises of the Cuban Revolution in the areas of social justice and service fade, many people look once again to the churches with proven commitment to provide both hope and solidarity. The church facilities in Cardenas were among the largest and most suited to ministry in education and community service in Cuba. However space for such endeavors is limited to the church. Restoration of the church Hall will allow for expansion of the many social and outreach programs, including feeding programs for isolated elderly persons, the washing of clothes, Alcoholics Anonymous and family counseling.

Full architectural plans have been established for the complete restoration of the Hall. The total cost of $90,000 will be covered by combining the Shaull award funds with those of several other committed Presbyterian churches in the U.S. The Shaull award will ultimately help expand the social programs of the Presbyterian Church in Cuba at a critical time when the church can have greater influence in the lives of Cuban citizens.
