Social Concerns

The Board of Deacons sponsors efforts to bring important emergency and social issues to our attention, and helps us to mobilize our response. Three task forces work to make an impact in areas of concern:

Homeless Task Force - acts as advocates for the homeless, encouraging our response to inadequate housing for low income people in the Delaware Valley. On the Main Line, the task force works with other Protestant, Catholic and Jewish congregations in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), regularly offering temporary residence in our buildings. The task force also works with various shelters in the city.

Hunger Task Force - focuses on those who cannot obtain adequate food for themselves, resulting in poor nutrition and impaired health. Sponsors food and casserole collections to stock food distribution centers and soup kitchens and Hunger envelopes in the sanctuary (for contributions). Seeks to make a difference in world-wide hunger issues through "Bread for the World."

Peacemaking Task Force:

The Peacemaking Task Force embraces people with a passion and interest in issues related to peacemaking in the family, the community and the wider world. In times of international conflicts we’ve had speakers and discussion groups to help the congregation and community examine important issues. We have sponsored programs on critical issues like land mines. We also have plenty of opportunities for hands-on participation: the Lower Merion Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration, involving over 15 Christian, Jewish and Muslim congregations; and Adopt-a-Highway, an environmental clean-up project at the Schuylkill Expressway/Belmont Interchange ramps (one BMCP clean up crew shown at right - ready to go!). Donations collected at the annual Peacemaking Offering go to fund a variety of programs such as CeaseFire PA, a statewide coalition working to prevent gun violence.
