Outreach and West Philadelphia Ministries"...and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8 Eugene C Bay Urban Ministries Award The Outreach Council focuses its ministry in the greater Philadelphia area, including the city and surrounding communities, with particular emphasis on West Philadelphia. The Church’s outreach is offered in response to God’s grace and Jesus Christ’s great commandment that we love one another. We support both our denomination’s ministries and other outreach programs through benevolences and encouragement of volunteer commitment. The Council has four principal areas of focus: 1) Children, Youth and Education; 2) Health; 3) Housing; and 4) Churches and Innovative Ministries. Projects are evaluated and funded based on established criteria and require that organizations prepare and submit grant applications. Support is provided to a wide range of programs and activities, including the following: • Tutoring Program – a church program that twice a week brings inner city children to the BMPC campus for one-on-one tutoring. • Calvin After School Program – an after school tutoring program at Calvin Presbyterian Church serving children in the surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhood. • Chester Eastside and John Gloucester House – two community ministries of the Presbytery of Philadelphia serving the community of Chester and the Point Breeze neighborhood of Philadelphia. • Philadelphia Society for Services to Children – an organization providing skilled assistance and services focused on eliminating child abuse, neglect and abandonment in the city of Philadelphia. • Presbyterian Children’s Village – an organization that serves children and their families through child welfare, prevention, behavioral health and educational support services. • Camp Kirkwood Scholarships – a camp of the Presbytery of Philadelphia supported by BMPC through scholarships to youth in West Philadelphia and other parts of the region. • United Community Clinics – a free health clinic offered every Monday at First African Presbyterian Church and coordinated by University of Pennsylvania medical students, nursing students, and social work students. • The Other Carpenter – an organization that assists homeowners in the East Parkside community of West Philadelphia with maintenance and improvement of their homes. Please call David Heaton if you have an interest in volunteering, 267-284-0310, dtocarpenter@verizon.net. • Habitat for Humanity – a worldwide ministry with local affiliates that seek to provide decent, affordable housing for those lacking adequate shelter. • Broad Street Ministry – a new Presbyterian ministry in the city of Philadelphia focused on young adults with an emphasis on the arts.
