Baptized as an infant in First Chinese Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in New York City, Joanne left the church as an early adolescent when her family left Queens for Long Island. Moving to an upper middle-class neighborhood, she struggled to fit in as a Chinese American. At the time, the thought of going to church seemed like just another thing that set her apart from other kids. When she returned to Manhattan to study at Fashion Institute of Technology (1998-2001, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design), Joanne’s home church welcomed her with the love and over-whelming grace of Jesus Christ. Her faith deepened as a result of their acceptance, which led her to serve in various church ministries and become an active member. During those years, she found that her co-workers, most of whom were not part of any religious community, constantly asked her questions about her faith. Engaging their questions and hearing their stories, she began to discover her church and work life coming together, leading her to pursue education at Princeton Theological Seminary (2007-2010, Master of Divinity) in hopes of becoming more theologically equipped to serve God in the world and figure out how her artistic imagination and gifts could be incorporated into the life and worship of the church. She looks forward to this next phase of her spiritual and vocational journey as a pastoral resident at Bryn Mawr, a community that shares her passion for God’s transforming mission of grace and reconciliation. She loves to travel, draw with pastels, dance to any music with a beat and pamper her three dogs J.T, Trucker and Lucas. Contact Joanne. |
