Community Forum Distinguished Speaker Series 2010

Dr. John Nagl

Retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army
President, Center for a New American Security

“Iraq/Afghanistan: How to Prevail”

Monday, November 1, 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary

Nagl is a West Point graduate and Rhodes Scholar who has served as a tank platoon leader in the Gulf for Operation Desert Storm and an operations officer with an armored battalion in Iraq. After combat in the Gulf, he returned to Oxford and earned a D. Phil. with a dissertation on counterinsurgency in Southeast Asia. He taught at West Point prior to deployment in Iraq.

As the USA entered the war in Iraq with doctrines only of conventional warfare, Nagl was one of the adventurous military thinkers who addressed the failure of the USA to draw appropriate strategic and tactical lessons from exposures in Vietnam. He helped drive a project to produce a new Army-Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual, published in 2006. On November 1 in our Sanctuary, he will address our country’s ability to help stabilize troubled countries in many parts of the globe.
