Led by Adult Education Council Members

Discussions Based on "Speaking of Faith Series" from National Public Radio transcripts available for reading at http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/programs/
Check the archives for the broadcast dates.

JULY 11: Ethics and the Will of God: The Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
(Broadcast of February 2, 2006) Led by Tim Bickhart
Bonhoeffer’s life spanned the rise and fall of Hitler’s Germany and offered a mode of personal morality and conscience in troubled, immoral times. His resistance of Nazi ideology, in contrast to the submission of most in the German church, testified to his moral vision and faith. Martin Doblmeier, whose 2003 documentary chronicled Bonhoeffer’s life and thought, speaks about the legacy of this unusual theologian.

JULY 18: Getting Revenge and Forgiveness
(Broadcast of March 25, 2010) Led by Peter Craig
Michael McCullough discusses how science helps us understand the way revenge came to have a purpose in human life and reveals how human beings are instinctively equipped for forgiveness. He maintains
that knowing this opens ways for us to intentionally calm our revenge instinct
and nurture our forgiveness intuition.

JULY 25: The Evolution of God: A Conversation with Robert Wright
(Broadcast of February 2, 2010) Led by Phoebe Sheftel
Can religions in the modern world reconcile themselves to one another, and can they reconcile themselves to science? Robert Wright believes their histories reveal they can. He takes a logical look at the histories of the three Abrahamic faiths and shows how they could reassert their proclivity toward harmony and reconciliation. His analysis also raises the prospect of a second kind of reconciliation: that of science and religion.

AUGUST 1: The Soul in Depression
(Broadcast of February 26, 2009) Led by Melanie Wilson and Carla Crosby
Nearly ten million Americans are diagnosed with clinical depression. As a society, we’re increasingly aware of the many faces of depression and have become conversant in the language of psychological analysis and medical treatment. But a growing body of literature exists by people who have struggled with depression and found it to be a lesson in the nature of the human soul. This broadcast engages some of these voices and takes an intimate look at the spiritual dimensions of this illness and its aftermath.

Our classes and lectures are free and open to all. You will not be told what to think but rather encouraged to question and explore what it means to be Christian in this time. Come with your longings, your ponderings and your questions … to one class or to many. Blessings to you for an enriched journey in faith during this Advent Season.

Our adult education programs, under the auspices of the Adult Education Council, are designed to help us:

Deepen our spiritual lives and grow in faith.

Explore the impact of religious faith on daily living.

Acquire knowledge about the foundations of a Biblical faith, the basic themes of Reformed theology, key elements of Presbyterianism, and contemporary issues.

The Adult Education experiences we offer are broad and varied, and include Bible studies, short term topical series, retreats, and fellowship discussion groups. Some classes are repeated periodically, and some classes require preparation (homework!).  All classes are rich in subject matter and in intellectual Christian community. It is our hope that on Sundays you will attend both worship and an Adult Education course. Childcare is available for most programs.

Church members and guests are welcome. We look forward to supporting you in the process of strengthening your faith through knowledge.
